If he came home and made a phone call to his sponsor, that's a victory for him obviously, but it's also a victory for you! You didn't, in your codependency, ask him not to go out with his friends, ask him about what he did when he got home, or otherwise interfere or try to fix, no matter how badly you wanted to. As a result, he's learning to navigate staying clean and working his program on his terms, and you've won a small victory against your codependency. Nice going!

YAY!! What a huge step!!! It is definitely his recovery & he has to lead the charge. However, it is NOT co-dependent to call him out if/when his recovery starts to slip or takes a negative turn. How do you know the difference?? If you can see the decline & feel the pain in your heart (as mom) but point it out to him calmly & objectively (because you know it's his information to deal with--any way he chooses.), that's the difference. It's about acceptance & love--with detachment from the chaos. I'm so happy for your progress!
